The Last of Us (Naughty Dog, 2014 Remastered) is perhaps storyplaying in perfection.
It sets the player within a post-apocalyptic world and has him experience the dystopia it simulates. Probably the most important aspect of the game is the relationship between Joel and Ellie, which on a basic plot level illustrates the struggles of fatherhood and of coming to age. On a further level, though, what Joel protects is nothing less than the dream for Utopia, in the choice of Tommy’s settlment over the scientific enclave of the Fireflies. These wish to return to the old order and to the rapturous capitalism we have come to experience in estranged form in The Last of Us’s city spaces.
